Lessons organized by Vela Maui assure only experienced IKO certified instructors – many of them pro riders – employing the very latest teaching techniques with the newest Cabrinha gear. Whether you are a first day novice or seasoned veteran, you can be guaranteed a great kitesurfing experience. To make sure you get the most out of your time, lessons are private, 1-on-1 only. Like what you're riding? You can purchase any Cabrinha product from the NeilPryde Maui store, always the first in the world to get the latest models.
With consistent tradewinds and a wide variety of conditions from a handful of different launches, Maui provides the perfect windsurf vacation destination no matter your skill level. From Slalom sailing in Kihei, wave sailing the North Shore, or smooth shallow-water at The Cove at Kanaha Beach Park, Maui has it all! In July 2001, Neil Pryde Maui and Vela Windsurf Resorts teamed up to create the VELA MAUI CENTER, as the flagship in the Vela resort destination armada.
Located within the Adventure Sports Maui retail shop, the Vela Maui center boasts an impressive array of gear, featuring Neil Pryde rigs and the entire lineup from JP. Unlike other Vela destinations, you will stop in at the center to equip yourself with rentals to take with you for the week.Vela's package includes: choice of accommodations, Maui's best selection of windsurf equipment, rental car or van, and optional lessons. Each rental includes 1 board, 2 sails and a complete rig, plus soft-top surf racks for your rental car. Beginners can take advantage of a lesson program including equipment during instruction. We can help take your sailing to the next level.
As you likely already know by now, this sport has exploded onto the scene wherever a big body of water is available, and the coastline of Maui seems to have more "paddlers" than anywhere else. Guests with rentals through Vela Maui have access to swap windsurf gear for a board and paddle, or to add a set for an extra fee. Lessons available through our center provided by our partners at HST. Once you've got your balance down, bring it to the next level by surfing through paddle-power.
Maui offers many activities besides windsurfing! If it is not windy, no problem. Below is a sampling of the countless activities that Maui has to offer. General rule: if you think about wanting to to something, it can probably be done here! Test our staff's knowledge by calling or emailing us today.
Surfing:
During the summer months expect to surf the southern shores of Maui. The name spot would have to be Ma'alaea, home of the fastest right hand break in the state. In the winter months the focus switches to the northern shores. On Maui there's Ho'okipa and probably the most beautiful right-hand wave in the world, Honolua Bay. Ask the Vela Maui staff about rentals and lessons.
Scuba Diving / Snorkeling:
Enjoy the beautiful reefs and marine life by diving or snorkeling around the island, which could very well be the best place to enjoy the undersea world. Enjoy diving and snorkeling off the beaches many spots offer as much beautiful sights and biodiversity as expensive boat-chartered trips.
Hiking:
This can be a incredible experience on Maui with a wide range of conditions and terrain. A person can choose to hike the coastline, Haleakala Crater, or any number of exotic areas within the island. Get to where most visitors don't!
Biking:
Ride down Haleakala Volcano from the 10,023 foot summit descending to historic Paia at sea level, all in 40 miles of downhill cruising with only a few hundred yards of actual pedaling! Enjoy fresh outdoor air, views to make your heart pound, and hairpin turns to make your heart race. For adventure-sports enthusiasts, rent top of the line full-suspension mountain bikes, grab a guide or trail map, and head out to experience some amazing single-track trails.
Golfing:
There are many courses on Maui. Greens fees start at about $80 at the less expensive courses, or into the hundreds of dollars at the beautiful courses around the resort towns in the South Shore or West Maui. For a bargain visit the Pukalani Country Club (Upcountry) which offers great views from a different perspective at 1,100 feet above sea-level. Test your skills against the wind at the Maui Country Club located right in the heart of Sprecklesville.
Disc-Golfing:
You know what this is? OK. Check with the Vela Reservations office and ask for Karl to get more info.
