Getting there

How Do I Get To Vela Hatteras?

The Outer Banks is a destination unto itself: incredible scenery, quaint beachside towns, historical monuments, and endless windy beaches! And unless you live on the East Coast already, you will likely need to fly to the nearest major airport first, then either drive yourself or hire a shuttle service to deliver you to Waves Village, Rodanthe, Hatteras Island, North Carolina!

From the North - Norfolk, VA (ORF)

The closest major airport to Hatteras is Norfolk International (ORF). Many carriers offer daily non-stop and one-stop flights to Norfolk, VA. From here you are about 100 miles from your final destination, but a rental car with simple driving directions makes for an easy trip ... or a shuttle service to let the driver do all the work while you enjoy the sights along the way.

From the South - New Bern, NC (EWN)

If you are ready for an adventure along the way, this is the choice for you! Start with a flight into New Bern Regional Airport (EWN) then plan on renting a car. From here you will make your way East towards the coast then North to the town of Cedar Island. From here you will be "driving" along Highway 12, including two ferry trips to get you over sections where no roads exist! Spend some time in Ocracoke Island between ferry jaunts, then continue from the southernmost point of Hatteras Island until you reach Vela, at Waves Village in Rodanthe.
