Vela Kitesurf Colombia, our integrated Vela kiteboarding school is powered by the latest Cabrinha equipment including Convert, Switchblade, and Crossbow kites, plus a range of Twin-Tip boards. If you are an independent kiter we encourage you to travel with your own gear, and we will help to keep on eye on you when out on the water. Kite rental is possible to kiters who can either provide proof of IKO Level 3 certification or complete a 1-hour Evaluation Course (COP $100,000 / US$ 50) to show complete independence with your skills. Boat-guided supervision is also available, though if feel that you are not ready to get our on your own yet, consider signing up for more lesson time instead.
Vela Colombia at Mokaná Club offers complete basic courses as well as intermediate and advanced lessons. Your 2nd lesson is gets started with setting up the kite, learning all safety features, learning control of a full size 4-line kite on the water, re-launching the kite, then the "Body Drag" learning how to pull yourself through the water with the power of the kite. Finally, and understanding and practice of how to power / depower the kite. For the 3rd lesson you will have a review of the Body Drag, then learn control of the kite with one hand so you can get the board under your feet. By the end of the lesson the goal is to learn kite positioning for "Water Starting" and taking your first attempt to get up and ride!
Once you have learned the basics you may need some more time on the water. If so, our instructors are ready to get you back out to become an independent kiter! All lessons will be reserved as Private one-on-one to ensure your instruction can begin whereever you've left off and to progress at your own pace.
If you have already booked lessons please make sure to check-in at Vela the day before your lesson is scheduled to begin. We always recommend booking lessons in advance to ensure your spot on the schedule. Contact us if you need to reserve some time learning how to Kitesurf!
Kids as young as 6 can start with the basics, and it is never too late to start. But as many longtime windsurfers can tell you, this is a sport that requires discipline and dedication to "really get it" ... Don't worry: your hard effort will compensated by the amazing feeling of planning over the water! All instructors are highly trained each with years of teaching experience. Lessons for first-time beginners are available on a daily basis, advanced sailing always require a previous booking. Most of the lessons are private, but group lessons are available.
This course has 3 sessions of 2 hours each. On the first session you'll learn the theory of the wind, the terminology, the parts of the equipment and basic sailing skills. On the second session, we'll review and practice more basic windsurfing, correct positioning, and, if ready, using a bigger sail to generate more power and speed. On the last session, the student will be using a bigger sail and the advanced turns!
For the next level, there are 3 sessions to help progress skills beyond the basics. First, changing to a bigger sail and a smaller board, mastering the beach start, then incorporating use of the footstraps and harness, and finally the water start. At this point each session with the instructor will focus on overall windsurfing technique.
Ready to move your sailing up by another level? Plan on some reserved time with our professional staff to work on on special tricks and movements, or to simply break an old habit you can't seem to shake off!.
